BackGlenkinchie lies, as the name might suggest, in a glen of the Kinchie Burn near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian. It is situated about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The distillery is set in farmland. The name ‘Kinchie’ is a corruption of ‘De Quincy’, the original owners of the land. Its origins date back to around 1825 when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate. The original name was Milton Distillery. The brothers probably renamed it in about 1837. In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky.
The enormous malt character contrasts with thin fruitiness of the grape giving a dry, after early biscuity-sweetness. The result is a very long, dry, oaky finish with faint peppery notes. Best enjoyed neat, with a touch of spring water, or on the rocks. Try this as an accompaniment to sardines and also works beautifully with parmesan cheese.

BackThe distillery was built in 1794 by the brothers John and Hugh Stevenson and operated by him until 1866 when it was bought by Peter Curnstie. It was then acquired by Walter Higgin in 1883 and rebuilt. In 1898, Alexander Edward, who also owned Aultmore Distillery, bought out Higgin. In its first year of operation, it suffered major losses when a major blending company, Pattison’s of Leith, went under. In 1923, Oban was sold to Dewars and joined Distillers Company Limited with that company in 1925. It fell silent from 1931 until 1937 and again from 1969 to 1972 when a new still house was built. In 1989 a new visitors’ centre was installed.
Rich nutty, malty and full-bodied with dark chocolate and spice emerging. Oban is one of the 7 classic malts that have been made in Scotland for over 200 years in one of the oldest licensed Distilleries in Scotland. Sweeter than usual on the palate, rich fruit flavours are nonetheless complemented by a typical briny character. The finish is long with the influence of Montilla Fino cask-wood. Best enjoyed neat, or with a touch of spring water, or on the rocks. Oban is simply lovely with chicken satay or even crystallized ginger.

BackWhen Lagavulin decided to produce a secondary cask-finished version – The Distillers Edition, there were doubters who thought nothing could be a match for the pungent strength of Lagavulin. Those skeptics were unfamiliar with Pedro-Ximenez.
The taste is complex but delightful.. Dry and smoky with a big body. Sweetness at first turning to darker smoke (coal) at the close. Perhaps some saltiness too. Big flavour. Begins with sweetness, and ends with peat, smoke and hints of seaweed. Incredibly long even by Lagavulin standards, smooth and rounded, with waves of sandy dryness. Best enjoyed neat, or with a touch of spring water, or on the rocks. Try this with a fine Roquefort cheese and biscuits.

BackA real full-bodied aroma packed with a mouthful of flavours. It is initially sweet with ripe fruit notes of melon, bananas and dark fleshy plums. The unmistakable pot still spicy character combines to give hints of treacle, cinnamon and licorice. Mellow sweetness and toasted wood are complimented by fruit richness characteristic of the port casks. A touch of creamy dairy fudge and dark chocolate add to the complexity. Finishes with a tantalizingly long finish which covers the spectrum from the sweetness of fruit through the spices, to the unmistakable note of barley where it all began.

Wonderfully concentrated, pure clean Caol Ila – peaty and medicinal, with rich fruit, spicy and fragrant. Sweetness and maltiness strike first, then are quickly overwhelmed by peat smoke and intense, clean, crisp flavours. Caol Ila’s signature smoky bonfires are here, and build to quite a size. Overall, drying, in a beautifully balanced, complex, elegant development with cinnamon spice. Best enjoyed neat, with a touch of spring water, or on the rocks. Caol Ila goes particularly well with smoked duck.

Dalwhinnie 15: A crisp, dry aromatic nose, then soft flavours of heather, honey-sweetness, malt and citrus-fruits lead to a lingering, sweet finish and finally more smoke, peat and malt. Dalwhinnie is the highest situated distillery in Scotland.
Oban 14: A sweet peat and fruity nose with a spicy mouth- filling sweetness and a long drying finish with smoke and some salt. In 1890 a cave was discovered behind the Oban distillery containing Mesolithic human remains.

Lagavulin 16: A powerful, peat-smoke nose with seaweed and some sweetness, salty and sweet flavours with hints of wood and a long peaty-salt finish. The rich, peaty water used to make Lagavulin, runs down to the distillery from the Solan Lochs in the hills above.
Talisker 10: A pungent peat and sea-salt nose, a smoky sweetness with malt-flavours and developing warmth with a huge peppery finish. Talisker is the only distillery on Skye. Up to and including 2002, Talisker 10 year old has won six gold medals and four trophies.
